A New Play

Close your eyes.

What do you see?

A dream?

A vision?

Your future?

Your past?

Past love?

Past loss?

Are you haunted?

Are you comforted?

You can’t hide,

You can’t avoid,

Any of this.

You close them,

Again and again.

The mind’s lights,

go out and,

set the stage,

time and again.

Write a new,

fresh chapter,

to replace,

unwanted plays,

repeating,

in your mind.

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. We write to keep our sanity from all the webs of reality jumbled in our head. Who’s to say what we find in those dark corners is fantasy, or truth we have trouble accepting.

    • You’re right. Those dark corners could be occupied with just about anything. We might not like what we find but, no doubt, it sure could create a new play or story line.

  2. Of course whilst rewriting the script seems fine, one has to wonder whether or not we, by whatever cause (fate, destiny, you name it) are not merely going to replay the same scenes over and over. Food for thought, John, well written.

  3. I’ve seen all of these things, and writing a new chapters. Love this!

  4. *tears out page*
    “In the beginning…”

  5. I have been bring out all my darkness just to be able to write a new page as far as I can tell its been working

  6. Each time I close my eyes, I see something different. There’s so much that memory brings back and so many more visions of the future. You’ve put it so well, I wish it were that easy to bring down the curtain and start afresh.

    Nice one!

  7. Starting over fresh is great but sometimes before one can begin a new chapter one must find closure — a way to put to rest the past so it no longer haunts. My journey to finding peace and starting fresh has been long and agonizing but I am finally seeing the other side of hurt, pain, and sorrow and it’s a beautiful sight to behold.

I did a few posts on this transition recently (links below), hope they can offer some form of encouragement. Best wishes, and have a nice weekend!

  8. We are all suffering in so many ways … to be human is agonizing …

  9. The unavoidable anguish of the human experience captured in poetry<3
