there should be no fear of

a hell to come

rather fear those things

being forced upon you

by others who lay claim

to knowledge you don’t

currently possess

knowledge which will

for a hefty price

and constant servitude

help you prevent torments

but by adhering to their

sorcery and deception

you have created the hell

you fear the most

within this life

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. Excellently put, John, and the realisation of this is the first, though most difficult, step towards self-understanding. A great poem.

  2. This reminds me that HBO’s documentary on Scientology airs tonight…

    That aside, great point made!

  3. A very good representation of hell. I would rather have the knowledge then servitude to the unknown.

  4. A wonderful poem and so true! Thank you.

  5. Beauteous presentation of a harsh truth.

  6. Wow! Exactly what I am feeling these days. πŸ™‚

  7. I was talking about exactly this today with a friend who has recently left the church. I will pass it on to her. Thanks for distilling what it too me ages to say!

  8. A beautifully expressed truth. πŸ™‚

  9. Knowledge is power, power over our own joy, happiness, and sense of purpose. A wonderful piece and very elegant representation of a truth that escapes far too many in this world.

I feel like this is a description of college.

Eerie! This poem echoes the obsessive thoughts that daily drive me to find an escape. I am living this Hell, and I know I’ve laid my own trap.
