What is genius?

Who made up that definition?

Why does anyone care?

Having you look down

your nose at me

doesn’t make you appear

any smarter

and certainly not

like a genius.

It only means you

like yourself and

think highly of yourself.

That doesn’t equal genius.

It equals being an asshole.

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. Reblogged this on On The Verge and commented:
Because I have that same thought. Shareen

  2. People are like this, right? People judge you on anything including how much is your IQ is?
I mean, why does that matter at all? For as long as someone has a good heart matters the most to me. Now, that is smart! 🙂

    • I absolutely agree, Sherrie! IQ is entirely too subjective while having a heart is something you can only know after you’ve been around someone for a while. 🙂

  3. You almost echo my words to a family member years ago.

  4. Awesome post. They say there is a fine line between insane and genius, I’ve crossed over many times. Only time I am genius is when I recognize I have been a**hole. Which drives me insane. When I ask where was that line at? Now I am confused. Happens too often. 🙂

I too going to print yours and when boss not looking put it up somewhere in his office. It fits, 🙂

    • Thank you! I think that line gets finer over the years too. Mine has somehow disappeared and I find myself crossing back and forth from sanity to insanity. If your boss sees this I’d be interested in knowing their reaction. It’s great to meet you!

      • Thanks, I used the term boss, had to quit months ago. But if did printed and put in his office. Probably get fired right after I quit. 🙂 Enjoy your work also.

      • Whether fortunately or unfortunately I myself am currently at that point haha. In any case I find the concept of insanity to be a quite relative term, relative to its’ beholder, as well as to those whom seek to condemn minds that expand without boundaries, far beyond their own confined conceptions and without an “off switch”. So shit…I’m thinking I got a little carried away there for a second lol, but yeah I guess what I’m tryina say here is that insanity might just be the pivotal trait of “genius”…

        • Thanks, Marcel! Someone like Einstein may have been considered insane or nearly insane but that might be because he was so much smarter than the average person. But true genius and insanity have much in common. It’s great to meet you!

          • Likewise, and exactly, in many cases of those we deem as “Great Minds” throughout history(such as the one you’ve justly placed above), the same can be said to hold true…
In fact minds cut from the same Persian rug I’d say, haha. In these cases; such as that of yours and mine… there is indeed a blurred line…

  5. Its never a good idea to claim yourself as a genius. I shows an inflated ego. When others claim you’re a genius. Thats called, good marketing and public relations.

    Fantastic Poem!!!!! Thanks for sharing!

  6. There two kinds of people in this world my kind of people and ass holes and its obvious to see what category you fall into

  7. True genius can’t be measured. Great post

  8. Hahahaha a genius wannabe just got schooled (if he read this).
    Great post!

    • I doubt he reads it. This is something I wrote after a really lengthy exchange on Facebook that covered a political discussion. He actually told me he was better than me and smarter than me even though we were both providing good sources of info and reasoned arguments. That’s when I let him have it. 🙂

  9. Or she! (no assumptions)

  10. Very well articulated and accurate thoughts.

  11. Usually the genius doesn’t refer to themselves as genius because they are smarter than that, its usually someone that is in awe of another that uses the word. However, your writing out of your thoughts was genius 😉

  12. A person becomes a ‘genius’ when enough people are fooled into thinking they are. One person’s ‘genius’ is another person’s ‘fool’: The world is littered with people labelled as ‘genius’ – many who were not considered as ‘genius’ in their lifetime but ridiculed/criticised for their vision.

  13. Hi John. Thanks for following my blog. The poem is spot on! Loved it. Looking forward to reading your posts.

  14. I think every one has their area of genius… or at least their moments of genius.
The word has been pigeon-holed… and thereby ass-holed as well. lol

  15. The last line made me laugh. How often do we encounter these supposed geniuses? You characterized them pretty well. Keep up the good work 😉
By the way, thanks for linking my post and following my blog. Hope you’ll like some of my attempts at creative writing that are to come.

  16. Oh John, this genuinely made my day!
