The Pit

happiness –

I don’t even know what

that means anymore

contentment –

to me that sounds

like some made-up word

direction –

I have enough of that

as I go the way I want

purpose –

my life can mean what you

decide it means after I’m gone

we find it necessary to

assign values and meaning

to everything

the pit in the center

of my stomach

tells me there’s no

reason to impute

meaning or reason

it’s only life

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. It’s only life, that’s true. But it is up to us to give meaning/reason to it. 😉

  2. Very meaningful… Loved it👍

  3. We seem to burden ourselves and others by tagging everything for meaning and purpose. Well lived life is in itself an achievement. Why tag?

  4. You can find meaning in everything without putting labels on it,you can be comfortable in life without this happiness cramp. It’s just the way it’s package,it has nothing to do with how it is

  5. I believe that the purpose of life is to be genuinely happy.. but along the way the meaning of life is to make people around you happy as well 🙂

  6. & people question life without reason. But why? I believe a life without any definite meaning or reason is a free life worth living.

  7. Mahatma gandhi “live like there is no tomorrow, learn like you will live forever”

  8. It’s so true, our human nature tends to label and categorize everything, if we just live life as it is. Lovely poem, keep writing X

  9. pit in the center! i love that..

  10. Pity that not every fiber of the pit can be satisfied, thus a conundrum of life, and so we must live it to the fullest we possibly can.. such as life..

  11. “purpose –
my life can mean what you
decide it means after I’m gone”
I found this very profound. Speaks volumes.
    Nice piece. 😀

  12. I like this one. Wise words.

  13. I have nominated you for Liebster Blog Award. pls. check this if you can spare some time.

  14. Too deep, sir…too deep.

  15. We make decisions
    Choices happen for no reason
We dig the pit for justifications
    Moments happen impromptu
Life is just a chioce !

  16. Lovely it’s got a lot of depth 🙂

  17. There is no true meaning to life if this life is all there is. We show up and if we are fortunate we will remain for 70 to 90 years. Then all the achievement and “happiness” in the world will not compensate for death. I have heard it said that man can live 30 days without food, 3 days without water, 3 minutes without air, but only about 3 seconds without hope. My hope is in God’s word where everything has purpose, meaning, and a planned end. I am not talking about Sunday morning preachers but according to the true Gospel.

  18. We really have surrounded our self with a huge bundle of rules and restrictions, that quite sounds like authentic way to live in society…!

But if hearing to your heart…why to get into the rules, their meanings and values for life.
All that exists is relative on the globe…nobody is right or wrong in his actions/thinking but just the relative difference it is…All that your heart says is meaningful, all that your mind witnesses is valuable.

    Happy Blogging
    Cheers 🙂
