Ear Buds

as a stranger passes by, their ear

buds crammed in their ears, I

always try to hear the music

they’re listening to, as if that

were truly important, but I’m

curious to see if we might be

in the same mood, or like any

of the same music, of course

I usually find that not only

did I get too close to them, but

their taste in music is terrible

that is to say nothing like mine

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. What a great people moment and I mite go out on a limb but I bet it’s true this actually happens

    • I do it a lot – eavesdropping on what people are listening to. Within reason of course. I try not to get in anyone’s personal space but once I know what they’re listening to it gives me a brief glimpse into them and into their life.

  2. Maybe you are the person who I felt invaded my personal a pace recently?

  3. All I can think when I hear people’s music emanating from their ear buds is – Do they have any idea what they are doing to their tympanic membranes with music that loud?

  4. If people are talking loud enough to be overheard, I’ll probably listen. Its rare for me to want to listen to overloud earbud music though, most sound so appalling with a mindless hi-hat backbeat that I usually zone out as quickly as possibe. Oh God, I’ve turned into my Dad, bless him 🙂

    • If they’re talking loud lover their ear buds then it’s just annoying but the kind of music – that’s exactly how I felt – like an aging man wondering what that is they’re listening to. 🙂

  5. Haha so relatable, I thought I was the only one …good piece John 🙂

  6. I do the same, but I’m usually quite disappointed with what I hear haha.

  7. Nice piece. I do that too, although I’m probably more often on the other side of the interaction…

  8. I often do this ….. *blushes* If I can hear music, no matter where at or how loud, I must sing along… I have to, it’s a must have to ..lol.

    • I normally don’t sing along but I have been in a store and passed a fellow customer singing to the song playing in the store that I was singing to. That was a pretty cool moment.

  9. 100% relatable. I would add to the end that I secretly hope others could hear the music in my ear buds and find they share a similar taste in music with me.
