Can You Read This

can you read this

or would your atrophied

heart learn of its condition

can you read this

or would feeling return

to your numb soul

can you read this

or would it endanger

your predetermined notions

can you read this

or might it bring down

the high horse supporting you

can you read this

or might your perfection

be proven to be self-created

can you read this

or would you come crashing down

from your imagined heights

can you read this

or could you possibly learn

that I’m as good as you

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. can you read this…
your poem is without a doubt filled with honesty and truth
some can see it, some don’t, some ignore it, ah, choices

    This poem is brilliant!!!

  2. So good. I always look forward to your poetry. It is so thought provoking! Brilliant!

  3. Fabulous. I think your last line could be fill-in-the-blank:

…that I’m homeless and don’t want to live on the streets
…that the United States ranks 11th in overall health care
…that I live next door to you and don’t have enough money to feed my family
…that God loves me even if you don’t

  4. John, go easy on my high horse! I’ve reached the age that I may have trouble skrambling back up if I fall down. I like this one best of all your works I have read.

  5. Who you beefin’ with John? 😁
    Good stuff!

  6. Very honest and thoughtful piece. I truly enjoyed this.

  7. PoetryAfterDark

    I can
    I did
It was wonderful and I look forward to reading so many more!

  8. It’s so frustrating to have words you want to say to someone but you know they well never see them and if they do, won’t understand or listen. Thanks John for writing it anyways 🙂

  9. Browsing through the comments I noticed that you say this was written about a narcissist, just as I suspected because when I first read it, my thoughts automatically went to the one narcissist in my life…this is very, very good.

    • Thank you! 🙂 I’ve known a few of them in my life and if they’re not trying to belittle others around them they’re talking about themselves. Being that self-centered with a superiority complex makes them terrible company. Not to mention the worst kind of friend since they smile to your face then insult you to everyone they can.

  10. Very honest.

  11. Thought provoking and truly well written… thanks for sharing… Sending best wishes. Aquileana 🐉☀️

  12. Soooo special. 🙂

  13. Great piece but insufferable topic….how draining these persons can be… Best to get far far away!!

  14. *eyes widening more after every line*
