My Eyes Have Opened

those nights when you thought

you might lose me, when

you were sure that tomorrow’s

call wouldn’t come, when

you were certain that we had

been together for the final time, when

you knew that an end was

drawing far too near

I felt it too and was just

as sure as you were, when

I was crawling my way to bed

only when it became necessity, when

I was lying awake for hours

planning my own interment, when

I felt sure that my eyes were closing

for the final time

let’s not be so sure again

my eyes have opened

often since then

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  5. Sad, but finally optimistic 🙂 I like that, John

  6. At 78 my response to this was the memory of so many years of nights I wakened and stayed very still so I could hear if my husband was breathing. Finally, I’ve either been reassured by the many nights we’ve survived or gotten stronger from driving him full speed to the ER enough times to trust that we’ll get there in time again. Or maybe, now I’m just too old and tired to waste sleep time on worry. 🙂

    • Thank you, Eileen! 🙂 When we care deeply about someone it can be incredibly difficult to go through what you’ve been through. Those nights can stretch into an eternity and well beyond. I hope all is well. 🙂 It’s great to meet you!

  7. I love this. So beautiful and meaningful

  13. Tring-Tring

    Eyes open
To dew drops on her cheeks
    Another Day,
    She thanks god for
Live each day as it is
    your last
    She has heard people say
    She now understands
It is not a good philosophy
    To live by
    Or let people live by
For there will be other days
And a day spent with optimism
    Impatient optimism
    for Another
    bright spring morning
    is better
    than the last day.
Always live like it is the day
    The last day.
