That Song

that song

a reminder of crushing moments

of days that last for weeks

of a burden that never lightens

of mourning that began then

and has lasted now for decades

let it play from end to end

it was there that day with me

and just like the memories and mourning

it can stay here to keep me company

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. of days that last for weeks…All too often they drag on until it seems there will never be an end. Then one day something changes….:)

  2. Feels like a song in my heart

  3. I’ve been waiting for a poem from you today! Happy now💝💝

  4. You just touch my heart every time.

  5. Ha… this speaks to me.

  6. A song special for the heart, because of the memories. Wonderful!

  7. Grateful Dead music helps me remember a now-gone friend and my years in the East Village. The memories are pleasant, funny and bad.

    • Thank you, Alan! 🙂 It’s funny how music can do that to us – sending us back to a time and place to be with those we remember. But there is funny and bad in those times so it’s worth the trip.

  8. Great one John
A song to trigger a memory
Just how it does to me

  9. Songs end, eventually, as do we all. And the joy and pain they bring will end eventually, as well. But, just as the song fades toward the end, dragging out its long farewell, so do our emotions fade ever so slowly over time. So slowly, sometimes, that they seem to linger on incessently. But I have discovered those lingering feelings are nothing more than echoes of our original pain, and even they will fade eventually…

Beautiful, if sad, piece, John! Thank you for sharing it… 🙂

    • Thank you, Lisa! 🙂 Very well said! When that mood strikes and we want to sit and think back to different times, those songs can be the time machine to take us back.
