The Space Between Words

did you hear that

did you hear a sound

it’s unlikely you did

since there was silence

right there

in between the words

falling among phrases

the pause separating

the chosen sentences

there is a meaning there

it’s often not what’s said

it’s the space between

the words

did you hear that

it’s there

right there

there’s meaning in

those spaces

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. Ah, goodness. I love those spaces.

  2. Absolutely, that’s where the real meaning lies! Well written! BTW, Indian philosophical/ spiritual texts have often spoken about this, if you’re so inclined. Have a great week, John!

  3. Nicely spaced out for us… 🙂

  4. Very well said. So much is said without using words. And so much is misunderstood.

  5. Silence and in-between and spaces can be profound. If one is listening.

  6. Superb… The beauty of silence cannot be enjoyed and appreciated by all.. And when mutually relished .. Oh boy … Words never less needed..

  14. Yes, have heard a lot of those silent words over the years. know exactly how it sounds 😦 Sometimes spoken words are nicer..

  15. Sometimes, the unsaid communicates more than audible speech. The thoughts within the spaces aren’t expressed.

  16. Yes! And isn’t it the spaces between that make up so much? Lovely. 🙂

  17. It’s not those mean blacks, it’s the perfect whites.
