Locked In

this room is still depressing

scratched hard-wood floors

covered in hair the dog shed

and that I’m too lazy to sweep up

windows that won’t open

a door to the outside screwed shut

far too much furniture

and a tendency to go from cold to hot

but it’s my sanctuary, my place

to hide, to think, to write,

I can’t leave or those other thoughts

will take me over, keep me away

from what I know I should be doing

I’m locked in partly by choosing

and partly for my own safety

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. Many people seem to find themselves in a similar situation…..some without choice. πŸ˜‰

  2. I can so relate to this..((((hugs))))

  3. once you find a home that copliments the kind of person you are and that you can feel most safe in , you still embrace it no matter the faults . At least that’s what I got from this .

  4. Right on the head of the nail, you landed. πŸ™‚

  5. I think the same thing…I can’t leave…but I should leave…but if I leave, I lose the words and the words lose me…back to the real world where people need me? Or stay here locked away with the words I need? It’s CRAZY! πŸ™‚

  6. Those last two lines…
    Great πŸ™‚

  7. So accurate!

  8. Sounded so much like. I like being locked up and be safe.

  9. I can easily portray the whole room…….tangible writing

  10. Ah! Laziness! I enjoy it sometimes!

  11. I think I’m liberated now that I don’t care about ‘the dog hairs’!!

  12. I can sooooo identify with this!

  13. Sounds like me…

  14. Arrrrr… So apt John. πŸ‘Œ

  15. Like others I can relate this (maybe too much). Yet, in the end, I believe, we all need a sanctuary. It’s just a few who realize its importance to being and becoming. Awesome expression of this mixed-feeling need of place and the place of need.

  16. I need a spot like this! Light and Love, Shona

    • Thank you, Shona! πŸ™‚ There’s nothing like having that refuge but I need to do some housekeeping in mine that I’m too lazy to do. πŸ˜€ It’s great to meet you!

  17. The flow throughout was amazing. Yay!

  18. I could definitely relate to this and somehow I’m scared by this… but a real pleasure to read!

  19. Wow. Another good one. Reading that makes me see how easy it is for someone to become a shut in. I myself have some of that personality that I think I learned from my mother. I have to be careful that I don’t let myself get into that rut but your poem is just the way that it starts to happen.

  20. Solitude is a welcomed sanctuary sometimes. I have to be careful not to get to comfortable there though. Enjoyed the piece.
