The Distance
the distance between us
is not measured in feet
no miles, no inches
can measure it
it’s not a matter of stripes
whether political
racial, religious or social
there is a gulf
either great or small
and it is created
neither by you nor I
by a land mass
oceans or the impassable
we are kept separate, brother
by an influence
we are kept separate, sister
by a confluence
their message
broadcast day and night
by every means possible
reminds all of us
of a manufactured
contrived difference
between us all
the distance between us
is small
the distance between us
is imaginary

so very true…we are ‘taught’ about what divides us, every day…well-said
Thank you! 🙂 Those divisions, like you said, are indeed taught.
You are welcome…yes, they are!!
🙂
Beautiful, John 🙂
Thank you, Swetha! 🙂
Love this
Thank you ! 🙂 It’s great to meet you!
It’s part of what I call “manufactured misery”.
Thank you, Pam! 🙂 Absolutely! Manufactured for us and by us. It’s a pleasure to meet you!
Beautiful truth.
Thank you! 🙂

John,Skating away …on the thin ice of a new day, (Jethro Tull) your writing brought this to mind… I dig your writing man! 🙂
Peace to you,
Laz
Thank you, Laz! 🙂 There’s less resistance on the thin ice – much leg drag on the blades. 😉

Such depth! Kudos!
The wall between you and I
Is but a wall that they built
I raised a hue and cry and so did you
But the wall didnt come down, neither did their guilt
Thank you! 🙂 Well said! It’s a pleasure to meet you!

Nicely said. ‘Divide and rule’: using propaganda to create tensions between people. “In the game of divide and conquer… we are merely pawns, they keep us busy fighting each other, instead of fighting them”.
Thank you! 🙂 Exactly and so well said!! We’re all the same species and all seeking some level of happiness however we define it but the manufactured divisions can prevent us from truly understanding this.
Priceless reminder in the world defined by boundaries and borders!!
Thank you, Taruna! 🙂 Like john Lennon said, “Imagine…”
An important reminder for this day and age.
Thank you! 🙂 You’re too kind!
I think our friend Mark Twain said something on this line when he coined the following phrase. “Whenever you find that you are on the side of the majority, it is time
to reform.”
— Mark Twain
Thank you! 🙂 Can’t go wrong with Twain! He hit the nail on the head with that one.
So true, especially during these times of political campaigning, which creates such a polarizing climate.
Thank you, Gail! 🙂 You’re so right. Either it’s the candidates saying something that upsets others or the rest of us are debating who the best candidates are. The results are a pretty toxic environment.
I love this. If only we heard it everyday instead of the voices of fear and division.
Thank you! 🙂 Let’s all drown them out if not by speaking we can just drown our their message by turning up the music or happier thoughts. 🙂

The distance between us is measured in words which can be written and heard but never fully understood. Perception rules reality.
Thank you! 🙂 You’re so right. Perceptions can most certainly overrule reality.
The distance between us fluctuates
Sometimes I know exactly what you are thinking
Other times, even your words do not enlighten me.
I misinterpret –
I cause anger, pain, distress.
I want to be at one with you
But it will never happen.
Thank you, Julie! 🙂 Very well said!

Thank you, Ellie! 🙂 It’s great to meet you!
Beautiful poem! Someday, hopefully, we won’t have these forces that separate us.
Thank you! 🙂 I hope that days comes soon when we all simply see a person when we meet someone new rather than race, gender or ideology. It’s great to meet you!
Likewise John :)… I think those times are near. A lot of people are talking about the shift in consciousness, and beginning to feel and see things differently. Not many people believe in this stuff, but it’s great news if it’s happening. Cheers!
There seems to be a shift in attitudes and perspectives. We can all hope that continues without softening us too much or making us all so PC or lovey-dovey. If we’ll treat each other with respect and allow our opinions to form as we meet someone based on their character rather than on their appearance, then we’ll all find peace.
Couldn’t agree more. Let’s start with that at least – respect each other for the similarities and also for the differences. Peace!
Peace! 🙂
Beautiful!
Thank you! 🙂 It’s great to meet you!

Made me think about a song lyric by Bette Midler, ‘From a distance’. Definitely a poem to set the mind an enquiry John.
