Standoff in the Shower

I see him

he sees me

at least I think he see me

or he feels me there

with his spider senses

it’s him versus me

right here in the shower

I’ve turned the water on

it’s far too hot and

burning my legs but

if I move he’ll bolt

he’ll get away through

the gap between the

wall and the curtain

I can’t move

he’s motionless

it’s a standoff

only one thing is sure:

one of us isn’t coming

out of here alive

About John White

I've written off and on my entire life. It took years for me to finally take putting words together seriously. Now it's not, nor does it ever feel, like work. Writing daily has become habitual. No day is complete without words having appeared on the page.

  1. Poor chap…….Was he a monster, John? 😉

  2. VictoryInTrouble

Lol! If it was me, there would be much freaking out. I hate to be trapped in the shower with a spider!!

  3. “Spider senses” – I took this to be a hube (human being), not literally a spider. It seemed all very sexy+creepy until the last line, which I didn’t think was the point being made … whatever … I liked it.

    • Thank you, Terence! 🙂 It was an actual spider and he/she decided to join me in the shower by hanging out on the tile. It was not a pretty scene. 😉 It’s great to meet you!

  4. I hope you didn’t really kill him but rather put him outside gently! 🙂

  5. Tongue and cheek and very creative.

  6. Oh no.. man against beast! ☺

  7. Ah, I’ve fought this battle many times. 🙂

  8. Awww…it’s only a Granddaddy Longlegs!;-}

    • Thank you! 🙂 I wish it had been. I usually leave them alone since they’re kinda cool looking and they tend to eat ants, etc. This one looked too much like a brown recluse and I’m far from being a fan. 😉

      • No, Brown Recluses are scary. Kind of weird for it to be in the shower, they usually like quieter places. I don’t know where you live but in NM, we like the granddaddy’s because they eat Black Widow eggs. They and the Recluse love our dry, dusty, clim.

  9. I’d understand if it was a roach, but spider? A little cute don’t you think? 😛

  10. Spiders in the shower really bug me…..:)

  11. Personally I love spiders. I think I must have been one in a past life. I would let it crawl onto my hand and put it gently somewhere else so it doesn’t drown!

    • Thank you, Nicci! 🙂 I’m not a fan of spider per se though I normally will live and let live provided they don’t get to far into my space. 😉 It’s a pleasure to meet you!

  12. This is every encounter I’ve ever had with a spider.

  13. Give ’em hell, John!

  14. A @ moylomenterprises

Hahaha. I guess you won! I wonder if Spidey had won what his blog post would say? 😀

  15. Dont kill the spiders 😦 lol they get rid of the pests and leave us to our business. Take him outside 🙂

    • Generally I tend to leave them alone, especially Huntsman spiders but those Red backs will kill you if you have a weak heart.

      • I have a collection of spiders in my house that i dont even notice any more. They never bother me. Quite polite little fellows that keep themselves to themselves. 🙂

        • We have a female huntsman nesting in our kitchen, occasionally she comes out for food, she will have 100s babies. We also have some White Tailed spiders lurking in my wife’s bedroom which can cause your flesh to disintegrate should they bite you.

          • Where do you live? I’m lucky in England I guess i’ve never heard of any spiders doing any damage to anyone here. They cause so little disturbance here we dont even know what kind of spiders they are. Theyre all just spiders. Maybe this has polluted my view :L i forget that in other parts of the world the spider game is a bit scarier.

    • Thank you! 🙂 He just had to go so he wound up outside the shower and into the floor where he was free to crawl far away from me. 😉

  16. This is funny and well written.

  17. You’ve managed to send shivers down my spine by simply mentioning the word “spider” … and, in what a circumstance!!

  18. Stand your ground
There are certain places that one should be alone

  19. This was funny and yet intriguing! A well crafted stand off, 👏

  20. For sure, one of you ain’t gonna be out alive. Crush it!! 🙂

  21. Reblogged this on wwwpalfitness.

  22. Would have to agree with Bushka! Poor thing!

  23. I’m sure the spider was as bothered by your being in there as you were about his or hers in there. Hard to tell if a spider is male or female.

    • Thanks, Alan! 🙂 The spider had as little use for me and I did for him/her. Once it was outside the shower it didn’t waste any time getting away. 😉

      • Many species start off by hatching in an egg case. The mites are too small and weak to get out, so they have nothing to eat except each other. Only a few are strong enough, fit enough and perhaps lucky enough to be able to chew their way out. That spider you see survived a hell of a battle.

Dare I draw an analogy to getting published?

        • That’s a great way to look at it. I was fortunate enough to find a way to get the spider out of there without killing it so it was able to go on to battle another day.

Let’s hope that analogy is prophetic. 🙂

  24. Very powerful and inspiring. Weak people scream, tough people write a poem.

  25. If a spider and I had a stand-off in the shower…it would win, hands down!
